The next program hosted by MPC, "The Art of Memoir: Capturing life, culture and history," will feature Vivian Gibson, author of the award-winning memoir The Last Children of Mill Creek, and St. Louis-based author Linda Austin, who published her mother's memoir, Cherry Blossoms in Twilight.
Date: Feb. 13, 2021/Time: 10 a.m./Location: Via Zoom, with link to come
Vivian Gibson was raised on Bernard Street in Mill Creek Valley—454 acres in the heart of downtown St. Louis that comprised the nation's largest urban-renewal project beginning in 1959. She started writing short stories about her childhood memories of the dying community after retiring at age 66. Her book, a memoir, The Last Children of Mill Creek (Belt Publishing) won the Missouri Humanities Literary Achievement Award 2020.
Linda Austin wrote and published Cherry Blossoms in Twilight, her mother's memoir of growing up in Japan around WWII, and became an advocate for life writing. She encourages others via her Moonbridgebooks.com website to write their stories or that of their elders as legacy gifts for their families. Linda’s other published books include Poems That Come to Mind, about Alzheimer’s caregiving, and Battlefield Doc, a Korean War medic’s frontline stories she put together for a veteran. She is a long-time board member of the St. Louis Publishers Association and member of the St. Louis Writers Guild. Her books are available on Amazon.com.
Vivian will begin our program with a discussion of her book. Belt Publishing is offering a 30-percent discount plus free shipping to MPC members. It’s easy to get your discount now on Last Children of Mill Creek by following this link
